Contribution of Spectral Shapes to Tone Perception

چکیده
Tones in tonal languages are defined based on the characteristics of their fundamental frequencies. However, it has been shown that fundamental frequencies alone do not lead to good tone identification, either by human or machines. This paper reports a study based on tone perception experiments in which participants identified Thai tones from recorded mono-syllabic, bi-syllabic, and trisyllabic stimuli as well as their modified counterparts. Stimuli were modified in various aspects so that effects of fundamental frequency, syllable energy envelope, and spectral shape to tone perception could be studied. Results indicate that spectral shape, especially in the vicinity of the first formant, contributes significantly to the participants’ ability to correctly identify tones and the contribution is greater with more syllables in the stimuli.

Correlation between Auditory Spectral Resolution and Speech Perception in Children with Cochlear Implants
Background: Variability in speech performance is a major concern for children with cochlear implants (CIs). Spectral resolution is an important acoustic component in speech perception. Considerable variability and limitations of spectral resolution in children with CIs may lead to individual differences in speech performance. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between auditory ...
متن کاملThe Role of Spectral Resolution in Foreign-Accented Speech Perception
Several studies have shown that diminished spectral resolution leads to poorer speech recognition in adverse listening conditions such as competing background noise or in cochlear implants. Although intelligibility is also reduced when the talker has a foreign accent, it is unknown how limited spectral resolution interacts with foreign-accent perception. It is hypothesized that limited spectral...
متن کاملMandarin tone recognition in acoustic and electric hearing.
Mandarin tone recognition can be achieved using either spectral cues or temporal cues. Although the pitch contour is the most salient cue for voice pitch perception × Liang, 1963; Abramson, 1978), temporal envelope cues such as amplitude contour, periodicity and duration also contribute significantly to Mandarin tone recognition (Liang, 1963; Fu et al., 1998; Fu and Zeng, 2000). Fu and colleagu...
متن کاملEvidence against an effect of grouping by spectral regularity on the perception of virtual pitch.
Two experiments investigated the role of the regularity of the frequency spacing of harmonics, as a separate factor from harmonicity, on the perception of the virtual pitch of a harmonic series. The first experiment compared the shifts produced by mistuning the 3rd, 4th, and 5th harmonics in the pitch of two harmonic series: the odd-H and the all-H tones. The odd-H tone contained odd harmonics ...
متن کاملDeficits of congenital amusia beyond pitch: Evidence from impaired categorical perception of vowels in Cantonese-speaking congenital amusics
Congenital amusia is a lifelong disorder of fine-grained pitch processing in music and speech. However, it remains unclear whether amusia is a pitch-specific deficit, or whether it affects frequency/spectral processing more broadly, such as the perception of formant frequency in vowels, apart from pitch. In this study, in order to illuminate the scope of the deficits, we compared the performanc...
